Drip irrigation 5/8 inch Nominal Drip Tape. Drip tape is used for irrigation of a row or bed of plants. It is made as a flat, hollow tube with molded high turbulent channels to produce a low rate drip of water every foot. The water pressure of 10 to 15 PSI swells the tape to a round tube.
This tape is 10 mils thick (about as thick as heavy paper). It is strong and tough, but can be damaged by garden tools, birds, mice and some insects. It is easily repaired with repair couplers. It is also inexpensive enough to use one season and then discard (or recycle).
Other thicknesses are available, but 10 mil is a medium to heavy duty thickness suitable for garden use.
Commercial farmers use this same tube to irrigate large acreages of vegetables and grain crops. Because the water is applied to the roots instead of sprayed in the air, drip tape is an economical alternative to large scale sprinkler systems.
