A typical drip irrigation system for trees and shrubs has a 1/2 inch tube laid on the ground from tree to tree. An emitter is installed at each tree and shrub to drip water. If large trees are to be watered, a loop may be made around the tree and several emitters used to water the large tree. The tubing may be on top of the ground or buried. Drip irrigation tape is another innovation for watering a continuous strip such as a garden row or flowerbed. Drip tape is a thin-wall, flat plastic tube that expands under water pressure. Water drips out openings on 12- inch spacing. Like the drip tubing used for trees, the water pressure must be reduced from city or well pressure by a pressure regulator. I have used drip irrigation for watering Christmas trees since the first planting. This irrigation method is relatively inexpensive and saves time and labor. It is readily adapted to use of water meters or timers. A pressure regulator must be used in the supply line to limit pressure and avoid splitting the tubing or blowing fittings off the tube. After the simple installation, weekly watering is accomplished by turning the water on, waiting the desired time and turning it off again. No time is wasted by standing and watching the water run out of the hose.
I have used drip tape the last two seasons for closely spaced tree seedlings. Drip tape may be used for any irrigation application where a continuous wetted strip is desired. The drip tape is economical and can save both water and time. The only problems I have had were gophers chewing on the buried tape and crows pecking holes in the tape lying on the ground. However, these are not common problems. Holes can be repaired easily by adding a coupler. I recommend burying the tape just below the surface if you think birds might give you trouble.
