Our Farmall 400 Diesel tractor is the largest tractor at The Christmas Tree Farm near Duncan, Oklahoma. The tractor was built in 1956. It is in fair condition and is in need of new paint. An unusual feature of this tractor is the starting system. This model of tractor is started on gasoline, the engine is warmed, then the fuel and valve systems are changed to diesel. This design added complexity to the tractor, but made cold weather starting easier. The Farmall 400 Diesel was built by the International Harvester Company of Chicago, IL. The 400 was produced between 1954 and 1956. The 264 cubic inch engine produced about 50 HP at 1450 RPM. The transmission has five forward speeds and one speed in reverse. This tractor has the Fast Hitch system - an alternative to the 3-point hitch system of competitors. It also has the Torque Amplifier, which gave a high and low speed in each transmission gear. We use this tractor for heavy pulling work on our farm. In the future we hope to add equipment to take advantage of the hydraulic lift capability for forklift work and deep ripping. The Farmall 400 Diesel joins our other tractor, the Farmall A on the Christmas Tree Farm.
